Post dedicated to [livejournal.com profile] ellapropella, who like me, probably feels orphaned today...

Remembering the year Mesut made three finals and won two of them...

A Trip Down Memory Lane!

Let's start with that time Mesut dumped beer all over his coach after scoring the winning goal for the Bundesliga Pokal...he was interviewed too and when he's told he's "Man des Abends" in this video his self-deprecating shrug and smile (he actually looks surprised!) is TOO CHARMING.

"Thomas Schaaf isn't fast enough for his boys!"

Why are we having this nostaglic post? Because Thomas Schaaf was sacked today by Werder Bremen after 14 years in charge. Bremen have survived the relegation fight for another year, but they are seeking to do better. And Because when Mesut played France in Bremen last year we had some very nice posts about his time at Werder Bremen under Klaus Allofs (deserted the club earlier this year for Wolfsburg) and Schaaf...and I have a few pics of Thorsten Frings...

Frankly, I think they've made a mistake. And not having the sour, dour old man on the sidelines is an awful prospect - Werder Bremen won't seem like Werder Bremen anymore... I have had a small taste today of how awful it will be when Wenger leaves Arsenal.

From Mesut's perspective (the point of this post): they are the two men who brought him to Werder Bremen as a record-signing for a teenager when Schalke 04 ditched him after unsuccessful contract negotiations. It was a very "last-minute" signing.

They were very nice to him. It was good for his career. They let him come to Madrid. Schaaf may be a sour bugger, but he was precisely what a shy lad like Mesut needed for his career.

From 11Freunde a typically funny piece in the Series "My Favourite Transfer" entitled "Vokuhila und Bierdusche" - which was written this year, actually, and remembers some fine football and some bad hair-days. German speakers are encouraged to head over. I even forgive 11Freunde for today's headline: "Werder schaafts nichts mehr" (OMFG how could they?)

English speakers can revel in my favourite part which I have translated for them and which pokes fun at Borussia Dortmund fans!

In this post we have anticipatory Mesut-centric, Dortmund Semi-final news, a feature article in Marca, unbelievable praise from a Betis player and from Pepe Mel (Real Betis's coach) and a look back at the match against Borussia Dortmund in November and Mesut's incredible free kick.

The Real Betis section comes to us courtesy of [livejournal.com profile] meowlizz while the splendid gif-making artistry of [livejournal.com profile] andriy_7 is responsible for the stunning gifs to be found in this post. Much love to both of you.

Pepe Mel "Mesut Ozil Is On A Level With Cristiano Ronaldo and Messi";
Ruben Perez: I have played against Mesut and I suffered a lot."

Real Betis's coach had this to say after the last league game (in which Mesut played 90 minutes and scored at the tail-end of both halves) -

He is one of the great underrated players in the league. He’s on par with Cristiano and Messi but just doesn’t score. Madrid has a diamond in that player, and when he scores more goals throughout the season, he’ll be appreciated like he deserves.

Meanwhile, Ruben Perez, the Real Betis player, was also interviewed after the game. [livejournal.com profile] meowlizz found the interview on Punto Pelota.

There is a lovely article by Chris Nyari about Mesut in the New York Times. I hope the link below works. I'm on an iThingie, and struggling to cut & paste.

I guess we all watched the game yesterday, and I think we all can be very pleased with the performance of our beloved boy. I won't delve further into analysis here, because that's [livejournal.com profile] jenny_jenkins's job which she does extraordinarly well. Only let me say this: I'm on to you, my darling Captain and you, too, Müller! You prevented a Samisut hug! I wasn't pleased!

The bottom line is: Everyone loves Mesut. The German press was full of well-deserved praise for him, so I thought I should share two articles with you. They've been translated by me, and suzanne410 (we all know she exists, but lj refuses to acknowledge her user name o_O) looked them over. Thanks a lot, darling!

Give me something to read! )

Mesut Assists Against Barcelona...Again!

Gifs by [livejournal.com profile] andriy_7

This bit of loveliness from Mesut got him a sudden noisy ovation from the crowd when it happened. You can clearly hear it on the version of the match I downloaded - even though BEIN Sport actually mutes the crowd. A gasp and a happy groan went through the stadium.

As it happened, the camera had panned out and because the ball had been falling behind Mesut, it looked like an optical illusion when it magically reappeared at his feet. Phil Shoen wondered out-loud: "How did Ozil get that ball down?" And then (after the replay): "Oh."

Elegance, speed, precision... )

The press love our boy this morning! Here are the headlines of FIFA, UEFA, As, Marca et al., courtesy of our beloved [livejournal.com profile] andriy_7

Amusingly, two photographs (with Benzil and Serzil flavour) were used for most of the headlines! For some reason the press loved them!

Spams for matches over the past two and a half weeks will come over the next few days (with the lad off in Germany we can finally catch up on match spams for various games!) But I have, as I said before Amsterdam, no intention that we shall fall any further behind for the other types of posts.

Mesut, back in Germany

So before the clasico match spam is made up, here are a few of the press voices after the game - because Mesut came in for some extravagant praise following weeks of abuse in the press.

And I'd like to start by thanking [livejournal.com profile] andriy_7 for all that he found for us in the newspapers!

A Brace Against The Faroe Islands: The Mesuty Match Spam

Based on the past three years, September would seem to be our modern-day-hero's favourite month where the national team is concerned. Three goals in two qualification matches during his week with the national team, one of them a penalty against Austria. But first - the Faroe Islands, against whom he got a brace.

You wouldn't know it from his typically delighted match-day expression,
but this boy was about to score a brace!

Bug-eyes scored a penalty today in Germany's absurdly lucky win over Austria. This is not a review of that game (I still have 54 splendid gifs courtesy of [livejournal.com profile] andriy_7 to go over - and 244 stills - and that's for the Faroe Islands!) but a look at the final Liga game and a review of Mesuty news up to the match in Vienna.

Our modern day, crinkly eared hero, against Granada.

Twinkle-toes marched out of the stadium in Hanover in knee-high socks and futuristic trainers...

- From Stern Online, after match against the Faroe Islands...

It's been rave reviews for his performance against the Faroe Islands.

But there has also been badly informed speculation about Mesut in Madrid this week in the German press (who simply copy what the Spanish has to say - and those papers have to fill up their pages somehow!

From the ridiculous to the sublime... )

The Portugal Match Spam, Press Reviews, Video Interview & Zinedine Zidane

Germany 1 -  0 Portugal - Match Pictures
('72 Gomez)

I haven't time to write up this game properly. Ozil made 5 scoring chances, but it was a poor performance over-all from Germany, lacking in fluidity or speed. Because Germany would normally expect to meet an opponent like Portugal in a quarter or semi-final it was also a cagey game with a knock-out feel about it. Most of Germany's lack of speed came from the simple desire not to lose the ball. Passes were lacking in ambition going forward and the defence spent much of the evening monopolizing possession and passing among themselves.

There was also Portugal's seeming desire to draw the match, based on Holland's poor result against Denmark earlier in the evening, though that impression might have come from their inability to get the ball off Germany for most of the evening. Unusually for a Germany match, the defence and keeper Manuel Neuer have picked up most of the man-of-the-match accolades, with one exception which you will see below.

Miscellany: José Mourinho: "Ozil Is The Best Number 10 In The World" -
Friendly News & Random Samisut!

Real Madrid's coach, Jose Mourinho, has cheerfully and uncontroversially (makes a change!) informed the press of the following during a trip to Turkey:

Mesut Özil es el mejor 10 del mundo. Todos le adoran y ven un poco de Figo y Zidane en él. Hará historia en el Real Madrid...

Mesut Özil is world's best number 10. Everyone loves him and sees a little of Figo and Zidane in him. He'll make history at Real Madrid...

For the record: Mesut played 52 games, made 29 assists and scored 7 goals. Last year: 53 games, 26 assists, 11 goals.

This seems a good opportunity to point out that our beloved [info]andriy_7 once created a lovely spam of pictures of Mesut and Mourinho, complete with press quotations from the pair of them over the past two seasons, which can be FOUND HERE.

A Look Back: Mesut Talks at SomeLength About Life In Madrid

(Originally posted in the old [livejournal.com profile] o_ozil community on March 23, 2011)

I've had several requests to re-post this press-conference translation after Mesut pointedly declined to discuss life in Madrid in his last press-conference. This post contains the translation of his press-conference given on March 23 (Oliver Bierhoff also attended). The Youtube video of Mesut's portion of the press conference has been taken down.

It was an unusually charming press-conference - with the press-pack behaving like fan-boys ("How much time do you spend with Sami Khedira!")

Following the press conference are the press reviews - which were many but not varied! The press was charmed beyond words by Mesut's shyness and the critical reaction was amusing!

Love to [livejournal.com profile] ext_1127286 for reminding me to post it!

Happy Reading... )

Madrid Get Lucky, Mesut and Pipita Get all Bromantic: The Mesuty Real Betis Match Spam!

This time last year, Mesut was described in a Guardian Liveblog of the match at home against Villarreal looking "as though he could use a few hot meals." Reviewing [livejournal.com profile] andriy_7's gifs of the game one would have to come to the conclusion that not much has changed in a year!
