I have tonnes of stuff to share from [livejournal.com profile] andriy_7 - this is literally the tip of the iceberg!

But it's happy news - Mesut is the only debutant on UEFA's team of the year - voted for by fans instead of the players and widely considered more accurate this year. He made 44% of the teams chosen - which speaks to his incredible popularity, as well as his skill.

Teammates Philipp Lahm, Iker Casillas, Sergio Ramos & Cristiano Ronaldo joined him on the list!

I liked this short article in LIGABlatt because it sums up what we close observers of the Özil phenomenon have probably felt over the past few months - and because coming on the heels of the announcement that his ears will be immortalized in wax and that he is national player of the year (more on that below!) it seems rather apropos!

Here is what they have to say... )

I'm going to get fancy with two cuts today because we have two pieces of news! As noted above, Mesut is, once again, National Team Player of The Year. This is the second year in a row and by a far, far wider margin. He blew away the competition - Miroslav Klose and Marco Reus - and was a clear double-digit winner this time!

Here is the write-up from ESPN

So much happy news today... )

Community announcement: There will also be a friending meme on the weekend to celebrate the community reaching 300+ members over the past two days just short of our one-year anniversary! New members are particularly welcome - though all the old ones we've been putting up with might as well show up too ;) So try and remember what book you last read, since that is one of the questions!

Pictures of Mesut with PM Erdogan in the lovely post by [livejournal.com profile] jorzil yesterday bring back many memories of our well-brought-up young lad in his other political adventures! There's no point denying it - he's a bit of a political animal (if a somewhat reluctant one) whose tact and goood sense always wins the day!

Let's take a look back!

The Definitive Mesuty Political Spam

The Chancellor of Germany, The President of Germany, And The Prime Minister of Turkey!

Here's a jersey Mesut signed for Christian Wulff (president of Germany). It was taken by the Spanish Prime Minister on a trip to Germany!

Mesut has his third nomination in three years for the balon d'or!

Here's his write-up!

GER

Mesut OEZIL

Even though Mesut Özil could not quite manage to pull the strings as he would have liked for Germany in 2012, he still stood out for Real Madrid. His 17 assists – including 16 for Cristiano Ronaldo – ensured that he finished his first championship-winning season as the top passer in La Liga. He was also one of the stand-out performers in each clásico.

For Madrid, Mesut is joined by Cristiano Ronaldo, Iker Casillas, Sergio Ramos, Xabi Alonso and Karim Benzema - the same players who joined him last year.

Both of his coaches - Joachim Loew and Jose Mourinho - made the cut for best coach.

For Germany he's joined by Manuel Neuer.

The Supercopa Spam Part Two: Stultification, Campeones, Celebrations & A Study In Samisut!

With Livejournal back up and (nearly) running properly, here is part two of the Mesuty spam - as seen through the eyes of [livejournal.com profile] andriy_7 and his beautiful gif creations - comprising the second half and the celebrations for the super copa!

The second half was a fascinating thing to watch. 10 man Barcelona dominated possession in the second half, and nearly got back into the game, for a couple of reasons.

A win and some bromance... )

Can You Tell Me How To Get To Mesut Ozil Street?

In exciting community news, Mesut will have a street named after him in his grandparent's home-town of Zonguldak!

I'm sure we can agree that the municipal officials are more than deserving of a [livejournal.com profile] crinkly_ears gold star of approval for this highly sensible move!

So much joyous news today! The boys are back in training and now this! Congratulations!

"The Only Thing that Matters Is The Title..." Mesut Özil's Interview With Express.

LINK TO THE ORIGINAL
Translated by jenny_jenkins & sashatwen

Danzig –  He who dances with the ball has his magic back. We spoke with Real Madrid's super-star, Mesut Ozil (23), one day after the tremendous win against Greece.

Mr Özil, for the second time you've been named "Man of the Match." What do you do with the trophy?

It'll take it home to put in my cupboard. I'm proud of it.

Mesut can't understand why Sami Khedira isn't appreciated more... )

Mesut's Post Match Interview

Mesut was interviewed very briefly after the match after receiving his man-of-the-match honours. The sound was dreadful, since the microphone were not fixed until after Jogi Loew began to speak, but his facial expressions are priceless.

His face from 2:40 on is particularly adorable, so watch carefully for that moment! Otherwise an unusually confident performance. Mesut's post-match interviews are in general more confident than his usual ones, exhaustion being an antidote to shyness.

The Portugal Match Spam, Press Reviews, Video Interview & Zinedine Zidane

Germany 1 -  0 Portugal - Match Pictures
('72 Gomez)

I haven't time to write up this game properly. Ozil made 5 scoring chances, but it was a poor performance over-all from Germany, lacking in fluidity or speed. Because Germany would normally expect to meet an opponent like Portugal in a quarter or semi-final it was also a cagey game with a knock-out feel about it. Most of Germany's lack of speed came from the simple desire not to lose the ball. Passes were lacking in ambition going forward and the defence spent much of the evening monopolizing possession and passing among themselves.

There was also Portugal's seeming desire to draw the match, based on Holland's poor result against Denmark earlier in the evening, though that impression might have come from their inability to get the ball off Germany for most of the evening. Unusually for a Germany match, the defence and keeper Manuel Neuer have picked up most of the man-of-the-match accolades, with one exception which you will see below.
