Post dedicated to ellapropella, who like me, probably feels orphaned today...
Remembering the year Mesut made three finals and won two of them...
A Trip Down Memory Lane!
Let's start with that time Mesut dumped beer all over his coach after scoring the winning goal for the Bundesliga Pokal...he was interviewed too and when he's told he's "Man des Abends" in this video his self-deprecating shrug and smile (he actually looks surprised!) is TOO CHARMING.
"Thomas Schaaf isn't fast enough for his boys!"
Why are we having this nostaglic post? Because Thomas Schaaf was sacked today by Werder Bremen after 14 years in charge. Bremen have survived the relegation fight for another year, but they are seeking to do better. And Because when Mesut played France in Bremen last year we had some very nice posts about his time at Werder Bremen under Klaus Allofs (deserted the club earlier this year for Wolfsburg) and Schaaf...and I have a few pics of Thorsten Frings...
Frankly, I think they've made a mistake. And not having the sour, dour old man on the sidelines is an awful prospect - Werder Bremen won't seem like Werder Bremen anymore... I have had a small taste today of how awful it will be when Wenger leaves Arsenal.
From Mesut's perspective (the point of this post): they are the two men who brought him to Werder Bremen as a record-signing for a teenager when Schalke 04 ditched him after unsuccessful contract negotiations. It was a very "last-minute" signing.
They were very nice to him. It was good for his career. They let him come to Madrid. Schaaf may be a sour bugger, but he was precisely what a shy lad like Mesut needed for his career.

From 11Freunde a typically funny piece in the Series "My Favourite Transfer" entitled "Vokuhila und Bierdusche" - which was written this year, actually, and remembers some fine football and some bad hair-days. German speakers are encouraged to head over. I even forgive 11Freunde for today's headline: "Werder schaafts nichts mehr" (OMFG how could they?)
English speakers can revel in my favourite part which I have translated for them and which pokes fun at Borussia Dortmund fans!

Isn't it bromantic?
Link to the German
The playmaker has matured into a world class footballer in Madrid, the Spaniards consider him the leader of Germany’s passing game. Undeterred, he goes his way – unless a colleague clowns around.
Nearly 100,000 in the stands of a Spanish top club? It’s been a while since it made him nervous. Millions watching on television? It motivates. Paparazzi follow him around shopping? It’s part of the job. Marco Reus sits two metres next to him? It’s distracting for Mesut Özil.
The Germany and Real Madrid playmaker sits on Sunday afternoon at the podium in the adidas centre and talks about Tuesday. Before the game against Kazakhstan he’ll be honoured by the DFB: the votes of 50,000 fans of the federation have chosen the 24 year-old as player of the year.

Interview link to the original German
Playmaker at Real Madrid, playmaker for Germany, Mesut Özil stands at the centre of the Royals and the National team. In an interview with the DFB website’s Steffen Lüdeke, Özil talks about his development, about the development of the national team’s game, and about the World Cup Qualifier against Kazakhstan on Friday (19:00 pm, live on ZDF) in Astana and on Tuesday (20.45, live on ARD) in Nürnberg.
DFB.de: Mr Özil, on the weekend you were switched on at the start of half-time for Real Madrd in the game against Mallorca. You brought a reversal of fortune. Madrid turned around a 1:2 deficit into a 5:2 win.
Mesut Özil: I didn’t decide the game on my own. We raised our game as a team and with a bit of luck made our goals. Even though Barcelona is a good way ahead of us, we still want to win every game. That must be a requirement of Real Madrid.
DFB.de: 3 years ago you made your debut for Real Madrid in the game against Mallorca. How often do you think of the beginning?

The Romance

Aww bless! One half of our beloved M&M pairing ALSO thinks she's being like, way secret-agent and stuff by posting a totally not obvious message at all on her Facebook (thank you to

And as soon as she realized her super-secret-agent cover had been blown, a minor correction appeared:

... and everyone was asking for a reverse angel? Sadly, one hasn't turned up yet, but apparently Sami, known as a mostly stoic, serious guy, must have gotten a good strong whiff of some happy gas before training because this also happened ...

If ever Real Madrid decided to hold a fundraiser (for, I don't know, to cover Cris' hair gel expenses) and were in need an idea, here's one: Hugging Booth. I'd plunk down my life savings (all 175 Euro of it!) to buy as many Mesut minutes as I could. Hug with Samisut? I'd take out a second mortgage!
I must ask, though: did Mesut suffer a traumatic training day nipple twist incident as a kid? Anytime anyone other than Sami even comes near him, let alone hugs him, during training he crosses his arms over his chest as though to shield it. Or maybe he's just super ticklish?
![[identity profile]](https://www.dreamwidth.org/img/silk/identity/openid.png)

Everyone appears to be in such good spirits that Sami didn't even mind that Essien was trying to give him whiplash. Even Mou was smiling!!
( All aboard!! )
