I want to begin by thanking our very beloved
andriy_7 because for this match I do believe he has outdone even himself!

Watch and weep!

I have to say, I considered ending the match spam with that. Why continue?
But anyway...

We should have seen it coming, of course. Zeit.de did predict that by October half of Europe would be copying Marco Reus's hair-style. This brings me to the line-up on display from Germany at the beautiful stadium in Paris.

You can't call a team with Lahm, Mueller, Ozil, Khedira, Hummels, Mertesacker and Podolski second-rate precisely (representing Bayern, Madrid, Borussia Dortmund and Arsenal, respectively). But they were missing Schweinsteiger, Boateng, Badstuber, Manuel Neuer, Miroslav Klose, Mario Goetze and Marco Reus. At moments like this, Germany's depth can really be appreciated.

Arsenal fans will be focusing on something specific in the foreground of this gif...

And I have a feeling Poldi is as pleased to see Olivier Giroud as we are...

But then again, it was the 50th anniversary of the Elysee treaty. Since it was signed, relations between France and Germany have been very cordial. Some of us will have parents (my mother is one) who visited France on funded trips (or, alternatively, visited Germany), fell in love with someone from the opposite group and learned enough French (or German) to say "I love you" (Mum again - she's thinking of you Pierre!), and peace in Europe was thus assured.
So really, the Benzil phenomenon is simply one of a long line of happy Franco-German relationships.

These people are all getting along!

Incidentally, I have no idea what Benzi and Mesut are up to in that gif up there, but it looks like too much fun. Meanwhile, Mario Gomez was not to have an hervorragend game, but it was hairvorragend if you get what I mean (German speakers have permission to shoot me for that pun).

Mesut was genius. If you want to know how genius, consult the post recently done by
hope_calaris summarizing some of the press. The French press is similar - and France's coach, Didier Deschamp was the same - he was brilliant. Or, to quote Sami Khedira immediately after the match: "Mesut is better than anyone on the ball."

See below for some evidence of the "Real connection" as the German press have been calling it.

The stills from this match were gorgeous.

Bromantic notes: France, Germany, Madrid - location doesn't matter. Benzema can never get any proper attention! All this Samisut brilliance had his nose out of joint!

Mesut had the first chance of the game.

And looked perfectly distraught at not being able to do a heart celebration after missing it. It was an astounding save from Hugo Lloris.

Beautiful work from Thomas Mueller a few minutes later and Mesut had another chance...

On the sideline, "Antschela" (as Jogi Loew calls her in his Swabian accent) was very disappointed that Mesut didn't take his chances. She was watching with Hollande - as though to underscore the doubly friendly nature of the match (as explained above).

The French were to lead at half-time after a free-kick just before the break. Benzema took it. Sami was the one who gave it up (hence the outrage!) -

But never fear! Thomas Mueller scored the equalizer! Antschela rejoiced! Hollande sportingly clapped along...He is plainly not a proper football fan.

And then...

It doesn't get more beautiful than that. When I read a match report (before downloading) about a "sumptuous" pass even I couldn't have imagined something that gorgeous.

*sob*
Mesut's pass was disguised. He received the ball from Sami (who left it with him) and then waited for him to make his run before releasing it. He was facing ahead with his whole body oriented away from Sami. He wasn't even looking at him.

Jogi's reaction says it all. What a pass! My commentator - in German - didn't even talk about the goal or the strike. Only the pass. Since the game ended, it has been the chief subject of conversation. Also, it gives us an opportunity to ogle Sami Khedira:

I love this picture - Gundogan was genius on the ball in his game and his cute bromance with Mesut (they were constantly together during the Euros) is too adorable:

There was a late French surge but it came to nothing. Germany won the game 2-1 (the exact score, in reverse, when the teams met in Germany).

After the game, Mesut removed his shirt. Alas! He was wearing an undershirt. On the plus side, his now famous abs can be clearly seen through the shirt.

One of the nice things about the gifs for this spam is that
andriy_7 caught some lovely pre-match moments. I especially like this gif - he looks chilled to the tips of his crinkly ears, but looks rather handsome, actually. Almost conventionally so. Remember how we all freaked out over his haircut? Seems like ages ago now!

Meanwhile, Mesuty-ear connoisseurs the world over will revel in this moment to appreciate the precise nature of their crinklyness from behind: bless the cameraman for lingering and providing the perfect view...

Isn't it interesting how Ribery gets along so well with his teammates once they are all safely out of Munich? Anyway - everyone was very friendly, even the fans...

It occurs to me that football (as the famous adage says) is like war, both sides think God is on their side...

Meanwhile, Patrice Evra doubtless returned to Manchester feeling, to put it mildly, a little nervous. He'll be facing Madrid next week. One newspaper noted he'll be telling Alex Ferguson who to watch out for.

A final glance:

Date: 2013-02-09 09:20 am (UTC)Mind if I add/comment on a couple fave moments of my own?
First and foremost, thanks for the Samisut pics. Here's one I think you'll really appreciated, Jenny. Am a bit surprised you didn't highlight this lovely moment of ear-porn ( ... boy, that sounds WRONG, but let's just go with it):
My personal favourite Samisut moment of the night, and the match hadn't even started yet! Admit it, girls, we all want to do this to Mesut at least once in our lives.
Let's just give a shout out to the coolest coach ever!
It's the hair. All about the hair. And the suit. And the scarf. And the cup of coffee. And the fact that he's Joachim Löw. (Let's just forget the whole booger-eat thing.)
I can look at the following two gifs over and over again still laugh:
Don't know whether Mesut's reacting to whatever Ribery did in the second gif, or giving Mario a disapproving look for whatever reason. Love how his expression just changes so quickly.
LOL I was wondering who it was Podolski was flipping off. Didn't see Giroud there. I really liked this match because it was a proper friendly. No fights or arguments. No hard feelings. But neither team slacked off "just because" it was a meaningless friendly.
"Isn't it interesting how Ribery gets along so well with his teammates once they are all safely out of Munich?"
He doesn't while in Germany?
Whatever the joke was, Gündogan (I can't figure out how to get the proper diacritic to go over the g) was privy to it while Benedict looks to be feeling a little left out.
Angela and Hollande ... How awkward must that be? Back at World Cup 2010 it was Angela and Cameron watching Germany v England together. You could see Angela trying not to laugh and cheer as Germany whooped ass, since she's got to be diplomatic, but her lips kept twitching every time Germany showed England up XD
And then this popped up onscreen:
And I briefly freaked out because I was watching four matches simultaneously and in the Holland v Italy match the cameras also noticed two astronaut suits in the crowd. Turns out this was some sort of "ambush" publicity stunt for Axe deodorant.
This STARTED as a beautiful pic. First thing I noticed was Mesut holding the ball like a little kid while big bro Gündogan gives him a proud hug, but then my eyes drifted to the left ...
Mats, that is SO undignified!
All in all, a great night. Always am over the moon when Sami scores, and it being a Samisut goal made it all the sweeter. The only downside was that Benz didn't score too. He's getting some scrutiny for that in France, having not scored for the national side in the past nine (or ten?) matches, but not for a lack of trying. He was giving it his all but it was just one of those nights :(

Date: 2013-02-09 10:09 am (UTC)Wanted to add this:
On Sami scoring ...
That one's for you, Mesut!
In all seriousness, though, I was so thrilled for Sami. Am always over the moon when he scores (and it being a Samisut goal made it all the sweeter). He deserves much more recognition, yet it's almost like people take his steady contributions for granted when it's really extraordinary how he can hold the entire midfield by himself at times.
The only downside to the evening was that Benz didn't score too. He's getting some scrutiny for that in France, having not scored for the national side in the past nine (or ten?) matches, but not for a lack of trying. He was giving it his all but it was just one of those nights.
And does ANYONE know who Mesut swapped shirts with?
Finally, I'll allow the undershirt, because it was COLD over there and I wouldn't want Mesut catching a cold or pneumonia by walking around bare chested. Then again ...
Oh, so you never remove your shirt on a hot Spanish night, but freezing French evenings are the ideal time, Sami?? Either way, more of this please! :)

Date: 2013-02-09 02:47 pm (UTC)He uses it in conversation a lot. Like, all the time.
Introductory interview with Real Madrid? I hope we play a "geiles" Champions League for the fans.
It's part and parcel of his Mesutosity. He isn't trying to be offensive. It's common slang for "cool"!

Date: 2013-02-09 09:57 am (UTC)It's absolutely ridiculous.
One of those Mesut-centric video compilations if anyone missed it. These usually get taken down quickly, but I'll leave it here for now.
By the way, did anyone catch who Mesut traded his shirt with? I totally missed everything after the final whistle.

Don't know about Benz, but all that leg is certainly doing something for me :)

Date: 2013-02-09 11:54 am (UTC)Actually, it means "horny" in German, too. However, it's nowadays widely used as (like someone on tumblr nicely put it) an "expression for the enhancement of awesome, great, super etc."
In earlier centuries, "geil" also meant "happy", much like "gay" in English.

Date: 2013-02-09 12:23 pm (UTC)I could not be happier for Mesut after this performance. When I saw all the positive press the day after I quite literally teared up. Sometimes I worry that I'm not objective. I'll watch a match and swoon over what he does to others around me and I'm not completely sure if I know what I'm talking about or am just biased. So it's always nice to feel justified on such a large scale. I swear, EVERYONE was talking about that pass, his overall performance, his specialness the next day. It just makes me so happy for him.
Oh, and this about that gif: he looks chilled to the tips of his crinkly ears, but looks rather handsome, actually.
I actually said the exact same thing about that gif yesterday! I feel like he's somehow (HOW??) becoming more "handsome". That word specifically... And I noticed that "handsomeness" shining through in this training pic from last week too.
Maybe it's that bit of facial hair, mixed with the grown-up haircut - but he has a much more mature look lately and I fully approve. ;)
(Incidentally, you snuck a RM pic in there! It's lovely though.)

Date: 2013-02-09 12:54 pm (UTC)Saved this gif because I was hoping it would unlock the secret to Mesut's mystery shirt swapper post-match (it hasn't), but I think you guys will get much enjoyment out of his ears in this one:
Suck it, Rudolph! Mesut can not only light the way with those red ears, but he can indicate left and right too! XD
