Interview From Zeit Online, June 2010 - Mesut Özil: The Shyest Of Our Stars

This interview, which was conducted during the World Cup, goes some way to explaining the appeal Mesut's peculiar style of playing has for those who follow or are fans of the German National Team.

This interview was conducted after Germany's Gala-performance against Australia, when commentators, gradually, were beginning to recognize that Germany's old way of playing football - dull, defensive and grounding out results - was gone, only to replaced by a lighter, faster, more attractive approach to the game. Mesut Özil in particular was beginning to be recognized as one of the main reasons.

Video: A Small Look Back. The " Mesut Ozil Homestory" By The Werder Magazine in May 2009.

Mesut Ozil's break-out year was 2009. He played his first full season for Werder Bremen, played in the UEFA Cup Final, and scored his team's winning goal in the German Cup Final. When this interview was filmed, he was about to set out for Sweden for the U21 tournament. He won that tournament with Captain Sami Khedira.

Video Archive: Mesut & Integration. ZDF Visits Mesut's Childhood Neighbourhood During The World Cup.

This little featurette (which is no longer available on Youtube) must have been filmed sometime between June 23 and 26. The Magazine in the story shows a cover photograph from the game against Australia - Mesut is congratulating Lukas Podolski for the goal which opened Germany's scoring at the tournament. One of the students makes reference to the goal against Ghana, but not to Mesut's performance against England.

Video Archive: Mesut's Interview With RealMadridTV On the Afternoon Of His Arrival In Madrid.

Mesut’s interview with a very friendly Real Madrid TV on his first day in Madrid (The headline in As: “He Came, He signed, He Trained”) and the rather charming interviewer Pablo Foley – whose German is really extremely good! As usual he is happy and happy and happy (freut sich und freut sich und freut sich) and everything is dreadfully nice (schön)!

Video Archive: Mesut's Very Long Interview (One Half Hour) With Cadena Ser In October Of 2010.

Translated by me, [livejournal.com profile] jenny_jenkins, with some difficulty. Mesut's voice is dubbed-over so translation mistakes were inevitable. Questions are deduced from the answers because I don't speak Spanish. The first half of the interview is all in one video. The second half is in 9 seperate videos of only about 2 minutes each.
