Pablo: Welcome to Spain!
Mesut (looking wonderfully attentive and polite, as always, if a little bemused): Thank you! (They shake hands).
Pablo: You just did your first training with Real Madrid. How did it go?
Mesut: It was very nice. I got to meet the team and got to meet the coach and I’m happy to be here and it was a lot of fun with the boys and the weather is really nice. It’s all really nice, at any rate.
Pablo: Oh good! What were the last 24 hours like? When did you arrive in Madrid?
Mesut: I arrived at 11 o’clock and flew out very early this morning from Düsseldorf, and yes, I didn’t have much time but I’m just so happy to be here and I’ve just done my first training with the team – like I said it was very positive and now I’m really happy to be able to take a nap and lie down for a bit – it’s all really nice.
Pablo: We’ll talk a little later about the team and such – why did you come to Madrid? We know that other teams (Manchester United, Arsenal, Inter, Barca) expressed interest in you. Why did you choose Real Madrid?
Mesut: Because Real Madrid is the best club in the world with world class players like Cristiano Ronaldo, Kaka and I’m happy, naturally, to be here – but the deciding factor was that the coach wanted me. And that’s why I’m here, because I think he’s the best coach in the world and I can develop under him and I’m happy with my task here.
Pablo: Did you speak with Jose Mourinho today, or earlier – or with any of your teammates? Did you talk to him before?
Mesut: Of course I spoke with him on the telephone. He said he wanted me. He convinced me, and that’s why I came. And of course I exchanged a few text-messages (awwwzil) with Sami Khedira. I didn’t speak with any of the other players who have only just become known to me.
Pablo: You exchanged texts with your teammate of the German National Team. What did he say?
Mesut: He came before I did and he said “super weather” “super club” “super teammates” and “it’s a lot of fun here”. Now I’ve come here and been able to experience it (in practice) and it’s just a lot of fun to kick with the boys and I’m naturally so happy to be here.
Pablo: You’re only 21 years of age but so many people know about your football – in Germany, in Spain – all over Europe. What are you like as a player?
Mesut (considers and sighs): With the ball, a little fast; strong technique and I…I prefer not to praise myself. People who know me, or who’ve watched me know what I can do and I’m happy to be able to show what I can do here at Real Madrid and I hope you’ll all have fun.
Pablo: You’ve scored a lot of goals, with your teams, with your national team – in the Bundesliga, for Germany – and you’ve always, you’ve always helped your teammates (the interviewer means to say “assisted goals” I think, but doesn’t know the German for it) – at Werder Bremen, and also for Germany. Is that what you want to do here?
Mesut: In every way. The time with Bremen or the National Team in the World Cup was very nice but there’s a new task for me here. I’m happy with my task. The team has a lot of goals. I want to win titles and I think there are possibilities with the team. We have a lot of potential and I hope we bring the season to a successful end and that we are successful in the Champions League.
Pablo: There’s a lot of competition at Real Madrid (for a place in the starting 11). What do you think about that?
Mesut: Naturally, it’s the same everywhere. It was like that in Bremen and it was like that for me on the German National Team. I always give my best and of course ultimately it is up to the coach.
Pablo: Tell us a little about your German teams. In 2009 you were with the U-21 and this year with the German National Team in South Africa. In these 12 months or 2 years people got to know a lot about you. Why do you think that is?
Mesut: I think I’ve shown in the past couple of years what I can do – also in the tournaments like the World Cup – where the whole world was watching and you could see what I can do. I think through the World Cup I became better known and I’m happy about it, naturally. It was a big thing to come in third at the World Cup with the National Team and we had a lot of fun.
Pablo: You’ve played against your new friends at Real Madrid – Germany played Spain in the World Cup in South Africa. Have you talked about it?
Mesut (smiling): No, we haven’t actually talked about it. But it was a very nice game and one must say that Spain was the best team and really earned their win and I would like once more to congratulate Spain now they are World Champions. They really earned it.
Pablo: What differences do you see between the Bundesliga and La Liga? Do you know a lot about the Spanish Liga? Did you watch many of the games?
Mesut: I did watch the Liga – for example, the Derbys between Barca and Valencia – but mostly I couldn’t because the games were on at the same time that we were playing. But I did watch and I find it one of the strongest leagues in the world and I’m happy to be here.
Pablo: What do you think the differences are?
Mesut: Naturally I find the Liga in Spain to be a little stronger than the Bundesliga and there are so many world class players – the names - like Cristiano Ronaldo, Kaka – who play in Spain.
Pablo: We want to talk about you a little. What do you like to do in your free time?
Mesut: I spend a lot of time with my family and my friends when they can visit me and…yes…I’m a family-person who is always happy to be at home. I do have fun now and then – I go out to the movie-theatre or something like that. But normally I am at home.
Pablo: And your family is from Turkey, right – they came to Gelsenkirchen? So in Germany and Turkey you’ve got a lot of fans, shall we say?
Mesut: Exactly, my family came from Turkey, my roots come from Turkey, I’m very proud of this. I’m in the third generation in Germany and feel really good there – because I grew up there, was born there, have many friends and naturally, I think both countries will press their thumbs for me and will follow what I do.
Pablo: You’ve got a new life here in Spain now. You said before the weather is really nice – in Bremen, I know it rains a lot, here – not so much! (Mesut smiles) It’s much hotter – a little like Turkey, no?
Mesut: Exactly. I find the atmosphere extremely nice. When I first landed I saw the city and it’s a really beautiful city, a very interesting city and like I said before the weather is just really nice and…I’m happy about it. (That's right Mesut...when in doubt, talk about the weather and everybody’s health!)
Pablo: You’ve seen the Bernabeu and the Valdebebas and what do you think of them? What are the differences between here and Bremen?
Mesut: The stadium is enormously large and I think the atmosphere will be somewhat different. Naturally it was very nice in Bremen but we had 50 thousand or so there and here more than 80 thousand and I think there will be a huge difference.
Pablo: And finally, what would you say to the Real Madrid fan-base - for this…for your year here in Spain, shall we say?
Mesut: I’d hope they would support us as they have in previous years and press their thumbs for us and we hope to play a great season and a great Champion League and to offer the fans something.
Pablo: We wish you lot’s of luck in this coming year…
