Germany 3 Belgium 1 - Samisut ♥ - Mesut Rescues The Turkish National Team & Removes His Shirt - The Match Report And Spam, Media Review & Belly!BonusPics!

A strike with the first touch! Unbelievable (and oh-so-bromantic)!
Before leaving Istanul, Mesut paid a visit to the Turkish locker-room and reassured his German friends on that team: "Don't worry. We're sure to beat Belgium!"

Watch closely, there's some sneaky Samisut action in this gif!
Actually the desire to win was very strong with the whole team. Qualification had been managed a month before in record time, but the team desperately wanted to beat the 1982 record of 8 wins in 8 games. Qualification groups were smaller in those days. To top that achievement, they needed 10 wins in 10 games.
Crinkly-eared adorableness before the match!
Quite honestly, for the first half-hour, it certainly didn't look as though Mesut should have been making extravagant promises. Germany marched into a stadium so relentlessly hostile, I am sure many viewers double-checked to make sure the match was being played in Germany and not Belgium. Every German touch on the ball was jeered. The only saving grace was that we weren't getting many touches on the ball initially, which kept the hostility down to a minimum.

"You have to be kidding me!"
The Belgians were relentless in attack - and it looked bad. Viewers might have started panicking, remembering that for Belgium, this was an absolute must-win of a game. Win in Duesseldorf and they were through, regardless of what was going on in Azerbaijan.
Bug-eyes cheered some of us up by looking ever-so-faintly (though very calmly) distraught.

But Germany did what it always does when it is under pressure! The Mannschaft soaked it up with Italian style-defending and waited for better times. And for all the pressure, Belgium never got anywhere near Manuel Neuer's goal.
Samisut Strikes Back!
And what the Belgians weren't counting on was that love conquers all!

Mesut's strike - note how Hoewedes and Hummels are clutching each other in amazement!
Germany's first goal (Mesut's) - in the 31st minute!

Sami assisting under pressure, Mesut scoring with grace, precision and technique.
A Karim Benzema-style strike!

The stunned expression from the Belgian defence cracks me up everytime!
And like Benzema, Mesut decided to take off and fly during his goal celebration...

...with a little help from old Werder Bremen teammate Per "the friendly giant" Mertesacker (now of Arsenal) who bent down and scooped Mesut up with little difficulty (he's 7 inches taller!)...

...In the moments before Sami Khedira reached Mesut.

Oh dear - why so sweet boys?
Everyone, but everyone, gave Mesut a well-deserved cuddle and the hair-ruffling was so enthusiastic that Mesut's coiffure was entirely wrecked - which simply made him look even more lethally adorable than usual -

"I may look cute but I have a license to kill!"

And as it turns out, Hoewedes is actually good for something - his shoulder appears to be very comfy indeed!

Smooth Sailing!
Well it was smooth sailing after that. Germany win just over 90% of the games in which they score first. Indeed, an almost delightful serenity settled over the pitch. The crowd was shocked into silence by Mesut's brilliance, and there was a lovely inevitability about Andre "team's pet poodle" Schuerrle's strike three minutes later, for which Mesut made the penultimate pass.

Germany entered the break feeling very certain of themselves...and marched off the pitch looking entirely boss!

Mesut was perfectly adorable walking off the pitch...
Even the Belgian commentator who had been brought in to make fire and brimstone predictions on ZDF in a profoundly funny accent (which always takes out the sting, doesn't it) about how Belgium would be surprising the Mannschaft was entirely humbled - noting to Kathrin and Ollie in the studio that "there's no coming back from this. It's a training game now for Germany." Sorry, darling. It's what we do!

Meanwhile, off in Azerbaijan, The Turks were also in their half-time break after a nervy start. Their game was still at 0:0 so one can imagine the anticipation with which they turned on their television set to discover that Mesut (with some bromantic aid) had not only kept his promise to ensure their qualification, but had been blowing them kisses to boot!

Turkey immediately settled down, secure in the knowledge that Germany has never surrendered a two goal lead in qualification and that Mesut had everything under control, picked themselves up and scored in the second half, beating Azerbaijan 0:1. They will be in the play-offs and will be hoping to avoid Portugal.
Back in Duesseldorf after the break, Germany completed the route by scoring, as they are wont to do - almost immediately after returning to the pitch. A lovely one-two with Mesut and Gomez was through on goal. Again - much cuddling and happiness.

Germany's goal-scorers!
And why not? Mesut deserved a cuddle. He was involved in every single German goal, scoring once, making the penultimate pass for the second and assisting the third.

More sneaky Samisut and cuddles from ex-club-teammate Manuel Neuer.
He was easily man-of-the-match for the third consecutive national team game in which he took part.
Press Reviews -

- were even more than usually glowing. And interestingly, a review of the German Newspapers this morning also means a review of the Turkish newspapers, as the following will illustrate (German extracts, followed by the English translations, which are by me,

From WeltOnline
The Turks Celebrate Their Lost Son, Mesut Özil
The Turks can, thanks to a win against Azerbaijan and a German helping-hand, hope to get to the finals. Above all: Özil is being celebrated.
First vilified, the celebrated: The Turks have taken Mesut Ozil back into their hearts after good news out of Duesseldorf. "Thank you Germany, Thank you Ozil. Mesut can never again be criticized" says the Daily Newspaper Sabah and Hurriyet (ie., the newspaper that peddled the rumours Mesut asked to be excused from the game against Turkey and was feigning injury) "Mesut has carried the Turks on a pink cloud. He's opened the way for us to the Play-offs. He may play for Germany, but his heart beat this evening for Turkey."

Meanwhile, off at the Sueddeutsche Zeitung - a similar theme!
Turkey Celebrates Ozil's Help
Istanul (dpa) - Turkish-German relations are uplifted after a football-helping-hand and Mesut Ozil has gone from prodigal son to hero in his homeland.
"The German win with Mesut is our win" writes newspaper daily Radikal after the 3:1 against Belgium helped Turkey to the play-offs. "It's time for a thank you and an apology for Mesut."
(Awwwzil! I told you they love him! They call him "Mesut" in their newspapers and coverage - no "Ozil" required! And I do so love a happy ending!)

And Der Spiegel - which has also been waxing nostagic over this past week - replete with Mesut's most famous photograph -

"I took off my sweaty things, walked back to the locker-room and there she was!"
It was almost an away game in Berlin against Turkey. Klose again scored twice, but in the spotlight stood Mesut Ozil. The son of Turkish immigrants had decided on a career in the German National Team and against the Turkish association. In Berlin he was whistled off the pitch. Ozil remained unimpressed, scored a goal and then landed a day later on the front-pages of many newspapers because he had shaken the hand of locker-room guest Angela Merkel while rather scantily clad.

There's little point in reviewing other newspapers in any detail. They are all agreed - Germany's little left-footed magician was man-of-the-match, his performance was splendid, Germans are thrilled to get their record of 10/10 wins and Germany-Turkey football relations are back on an even keel a full year after they went hay-wire!
Also - to put an exclamation mark on a nearly perfect evening - our darling dearest friends - the Oranje - lost their 10th qualification match! LOLOLOLOLOL!
Well done Mesut, well done boys! Sucks to be you, Netherlands!

Who would have supposed that all those times Marouane Fellaini had been knocking Mesut to the ground...

...it was simply a clumsy attempt at flirting before asking him to remove his shirt?

"Can't we just hug? I'm such a fan!"

Update: Mesut's Post-Match Interview
Interviewer: Congratulations, Mesut Ozil! 10 wins in 10 games. The chore of qualifying for the European Championships was long since managed. Today a few difficultes?
Mesut: Yeah. We wanted above all to win the last game. We were successful. One should just praise the team. We gave everything. At the beginning we had some difficulties but after 1:0 we were back in the game, we showed what we could do and deserved to win.
Interviewer: You scored 4 goals in your last 3 National team games (Oi! He scored FIVE goals (5) - not FOUR! Just ask Miroslav "goal-thief Klose" about it! Ahem...) Have you learned something about effectiveness and efficiency under Mourinho in Madrid?
Mesut (cheerfully fumbling his sentence!): I do myself, natuerlich, with the finishing in Madrid - to be confident in front of goal. I'm happy, natuerlich, to have scored the 1:0 - yeah, I'm just happy about it!
Interviewer: Turkey is leading their game just before the end (Mesut smiles and nods!). Is it a doubly successful day for you today - when Turkey manages it with the qualification for the play-offs?
Mesut: In every way. I'm happy for them of course. I have lots of friends who play for Turkey I have lots of friends in Germany too who are pressing their thumbs for Turkey. I hope of course that they'll win and that they'll qualify for the tournament.
Interviewer: Thank you!
Mesut: You're welcome!
