Appearances - Stats & Statistics
Mesut has overtaken Bodo Illgner (1996-2001; 2 Championships, 2 Champions Leagues) as the German with the second-highest number of official appearances with Real Madrid at 119 against Zaragoza! Some of you will remember that it was because of his shoulder injury that Iker Casillas became Madrid's #1.
To get to #1 he has to overtake Uli Stielike (1977-1985; 3 championships, 1 UEFA cup) -
crinkly_ears is rooting for you darling!

For Germany fans: Uli Stielike was a runner-up in '82 and won the 1980 Euros with Germany. Bodo Illgner won the World Cup in 1990 with the only clean-sheet in World Cup history. I am sure these are goals we all hope the boy with the upside-down-ears will manage with Germany!
Illgner is an affectionate observer of the Mesuty phenomenon and was even asked about him this past hour in Sport1's write-up of Mesut's press-conference (more on that below). Even before he became a presenter (next to Ray Hudson) on Bein sport, he was often asked to comment on Mesut at Madrid by the German press. His verdict: Mesut's on-the-pitch personality could use some work (he should be more demanding of his teammates, particularly at Madrid), but he's a stout admirer of the boy on the pitch and "not just because I'm German" as he told Phil Shoen during the commentary done for the last clasico. He also laughed, suitably loudly, when Ray Hudson said: "I don't think May'sooht knows how to foul..."

Maysooht Oozil during his 119th appearance!
Sami Khedira has named Uli Stielike as the German Madrid player he most admires - which is a rather typical choice, actually!
As it happens, Sami has 92 official appearances with Madrid!
Sami Khedira Says Something Nice & Bromantic
This segues neatly into part two of this post: Sami saying something awfully sweet. It was before the last match against Dortmund.
“He is one of the best players in the world now. He is among the very best in his position. He could still improve in certain aspects. He knows it, and I also tell him that sincerely as a friend. But I think that, with the quality he has, he is among the best in the world.”
Well said, well put and all-too-true!
Press Conference

(UPDATE: Even as I was composing this section of the post, the press conference is available online.

Mesut, with that sweet and slightly sleepy expression of his, took questions in Spanish and German and when German reporters asked questions would shift one of his earphones. His old trick of waiting for the Spanish translation to finish so he can formulate a diplomatic answer to questions he doesn't like is alive and well!)
Mesut did the required press-conference today (teams must send out one player and the coach to address the press before Champions League games) before the team assembled at the team hotel. It was about an hour ago and there is no translation up yet on the Real Madrid site, so this is what I've managed to glean from German and Spanish newspaper reports of the press conference.
On Jose Mourinho:
Above all he's a first-class coach who is hungry for success, is kind to his players, and who has won a lot of silver-ware. I have always said he was the best in the world...if we do what he wants tomorrow, we'll win the game.
Our objective is to get the 3 points. We are playing at home and the fans will support us.
On Casillas and Cristiano Ronaldo:
They are both the best in the world and I would vote for both for the balon d'or. Cristiano Ronaldo has scored many goals and is world class. Casillas - well, what can I say? He's shown he's the best in the world. I hope a Madrid player will be given the balon d'or.
On "Shirt-gate":
Sergio Ramos and I are great friends. He explained why he did it and I don't want to expand on it.

On Karim Benzema and Sami Khedira (who are both out injured and won't play tomorrow):
They are players of great quality and they will be missed tomorrow.
On his start to the season:
I'm not happy with my performances but I'm a human being who makes mistakes and I'll try to keep improving.

A final note: the German press is gleefully speculating that Mesut won't play tomorrow because of Mourinho's "praise" for Luka Modric. We'll have to see if they are right!
