Mesut Is Interviewed By Bild Zeitung, Talks Slang & Accidentally Confirms Sami Khedira's Engagement! Also: A Very Strange Loewish Training Exercise!

Four of the Bild Zeitung fan-boys have interviewed our modern-day hero at the team hotel. I've interspersed the interview with training photographs.

Sami: "How could you fall for such an obvious trap?"
Mesut: "We can't all be smart, like you!"

On the hotel terrace

„Das ist auf jeden Fall die schönste Phase in meinem Leben. Ich bin sehr glücklich.“

This is, in every way, the loveliest time of my life. I’m very happy.

We’ve never experienced an Özil who is so relaxed. He sist calmly with the Bild reporters on the sofa on the The Four Season’s Terre Blanche (Tourrettes) hotel terrace. Özil blinks in the sunshine. “I have the best season of my career behind me. Getting the championship title with Real Madrid, was just awesome.”

(Note to [livejournal.com profile] sashatwen: he actually said “war einfach nur geil” – how would you have translated that?
Edit: "awesome" is awesome! Thank you!)

Mesut Özil Super-Star!

His market value is around 35 million Euros. In Spain the midfield-magician was nominated for the year’s Starting 11. “But the season isn’t over,” he says. “We want to get the European Championship!”

BILD: What does your intuition tell you? Are we going to get it?

Özil: "I have a good feeling. The title is our goal, otherwise there’d be no point in going. We are preparing ourselves here perfectly and are totally focused on the tournament."

And what happens if it doesn’t work out again?

Özil: "In 2008 Germany was second at the Euros, in 2010 third. We always faltered just before we reached our goal. It would be a disappointment to come second again. But once the Bayern players arrive we can really get going. I am convinced we will manage it.”

For two years he’s played with Real. He’s become wider, stronger and more robust.

Özil: "I do a great deal for my body. But I’m careful not to gain weight, so that I don’t lose any speed. At Real Madrid plenty of players have good bodies. But Cristiano Ronaldo’s is quite unique!"

Ronaldo above all! Özil praises him: “A really wonderful guy. Very helpful.”

And the others?

Özil: "At Real you go into the locker-room and feel comfortable right away. Everyone has their fun (could also be translated as “play their pranks”) – it doesn’t matter how big the name is. Everyone is extremely grounded."

BILD: Your Real teammate Sami Khedira has become engaged. What’s going on in your love-life?

Özil (laughing): "You should write about me as a footballer. I want to keep my private life for myself. I know that I live a life that millions dream of, but I’ve worked hard for it, and I continue to work hard." *

But he wants other to profit. Özil: “When we win the Euros I’d like to gift my family and friends with a nice vacation.”

The Euro Title would be the biggest gift for him. For us to. To come second would be a disappointment. We’ll take Özil at his word.

How is he going to get a girl dressed like that? Jenny worries about these things!

Translator's notes

The boy just accidentally confirmed Sami Khedira's hush-hush engagement to stunning Lena Gercke, I’d say. Thoughts?

It also seems we'll be seeing him with that large group of relations who never leave him alone. Just don't get *caught* smoking with them again, boy!

Inseparable!

A Loewish Dexterity Exercise

Joachim Loew and his training staff are quite unique. They are an unusually involved group. The main physical trainer is an eccentric American who likes to have the boys play rugby during practice. They also come up with some really bizarre training techniques sometimes.

Yesterday - a co-ordination exercise involving tennis balls!

"Look! I can hold two balls at once!"

The idea, according to yesterday's audio files in SportSchau (Lukas Podolski: "It really makes your head hurt!") is to encourage certain automatisms in the boys' passing ability by forcing them to do something else while they have the ball at their feet.

"He's a bit weird isn't he, Mesut?"

"Yeah he's touched. Just a little."

And in other, bromantic news, Tim Wiese was seen looking calm and happy talking with Mesut - who is apparently the only person on earth who can make him smile!
