This interview and the way it was carried out is really very sweet. To keep Mesut from having to face another microphone, Harald Stenger did the interview himself and kept it in print. Stenger is the elderly gent who does the DFB's press-conferences and who has always kept a very fatherly eye over Mesut when he's asked to participate. He always asks the first question for example before calling on the journalists (a habit he has with everyone who sits next to him in front of a microphone) and I've always sensed he has a deeply affectionate and protective attitude toward the shyest of his players.

"Ozil: Everyone was friendly to me. I'd have much rather played."
Mesut Ozil greatly enjoyed the game in Istanbul. Yes, it was played in Turkey, and that he had to miss it and watch from the stands because of a sprain in his Achilles tendon made it unusual for him. Ozil hopes that he'll be back against Belgium on Tuesday for that game. How the Real star felt over the 90 minutes in Istanbul, why he was in the Turkish locker-room after the game, how his recovery is progressing and how he senses the development of the German National Team, Mesut reveals in a chat with National team spokesman Harald Stenger.
Stenger: How did you experience the 3-1 victory over Turkey in the stands?
Mesut: I was naturally very happy about the strong performance of our team. We really deserved to win. To be able to watch was a very nice experience.

Applause for the Mannschaft!
Stenger: Was it difficult nevertheless to have to watch and feel nervous on the sidelines (mitzittern zu muessen).
Mesut: The immediate atmosphere in my immediate vicinity in the stadium was so positive. Everyone that I met and who chatted briefly with me were friendly to me. That made me happy, although I'd much rather have played. Every footballer would rather be on the pitch and not sit in the stands. It irritated me that I couldn't play because of my injury and that I wasn't fit and ready for use.
Stenger: Did it make you a little angry about the speculation about why you couldn't or shouldn't play in Istanbul.*
Mesut: Everyone who knows me just a little bit knows that I want to play as often as possible - whether with Madrid or with the National Team. To have an encounter (game) in Turkey would have been a high-point for me, just as it was last year when we met up in Berlin. And when I read that the pressure was too great for me, then I just can't understand [the speculation] and I have to shake my head. I spoke about my (injury) situation with the German National Team Coach on Friday morning and although there was still some pain, I told him I'd really like to play. He overruled me however. He said we were qualified and that he had no intention of taking any risks.

Stenger: After the game you went to the Turkish locker-room. How did that happen?
Mesut: Hamit Altintop visited the German locker-room and brought jerseys to exchange with us. Then I thought all of a sudden that I'd like to go to the Turkish locker-room. I stayed there a short while and talked with the boys and wished them luck for their game against Azerbaijan. I am quite convinced they will get second place in our group. And naturally I'll press my thumbs for them for their play-off game.
Stenger: How many of your relatives and friends were in the Stadium in Istanbul?
Mesut: Most of my Turkish friends out of Germany couldn't come, unfortunately, because they had to work. And also my father, who would have liked to be there very much, had other things to do in Germany. He really would have liked to be there in the stadium. So I only needed 8 tickets.

...because he pulled his sleeves over them for the whole of the practice session! Awwzil!
Stenger: How does your participation on Tuesday against Belgium in Dusseldorf look?
Mesut: I would really, really like to play. The medical staff of the DFB are caring for me quite intensively. The complaint about the Achilles tendon has become less but the decision will be made at the earliest on Monday morning, and more likely on Game-day (Tuesday) after a consultation with the coach. Once again: I really hope to be fit.
Stenger: Nine games in Nine qualification matches is an unprecedented success for Germany. Are we going to get the tenth win?
Mesut: We are all very proud and happy over our series of games. We'll give everything to win the last game.

Stenger: What is your conclusion about the European Championship Qualification?
Mesut: Our team has continued to develop after a very positive World Cup in South Africa. We have a super team that has huge potential and that can go on improving. At the Euros in 2012 our goal must be the title, but all of our opponents are top-motivated against us. We know we can arrive at our goal if we remain highly-concentrated and bring our optimal performance to every game. We are highly motivated and we want above all to have our dream of winning a title this coming summer.

The reference to speculation about why Mesut couldn't play is the Turkish media report that he asked Loew to be excused and was publicly feigning injury. This is absurd, of course. As Mesut points out, anyone who knows him even a little bit will know that underneath that Renaissancesque adorableness of his beats the heart of a singularly cold-blooded, single-mindedly ambitious player!

Against Turkey last year, Mesut's ankle received a knock. He went on playing for 25 minutes.
Or, as Sami Khedira put it last week: his opponents fear him (for a reason!).
Injury Update!
The German media are reporting that while Miroslav Klose will probably not play, Mesut has been passed fit!
What happiness! (Let's hope it's true!)

His sleeves are still over his hands!

And that's all the Mesuty news that's fit-to-print!
