Real Madrid vs Manchester City - The Highly Belated Mesuty Match Spam

Our beloved bug-eyes didn't get the chance to play yesterday. He was warming up when Madrid had a man sent off and Mourinho sent on Albiol and Varane instead to shore up the defence.

Just as well! Because two months ago Madrid played Manchester City and this community never had a Mesuty Match spam - even though [livejournal.com profile] andriy_7 made beautiful gifs for the community and provided some lovely pictures.

So let's take a look back, to celebrate Madrid getting through to the last 16!

So here were the managers prior to the game - which Mesut did not start. Looking back, it was one of those moments in the team dynamic that was not very positive. Sergio Ramos was sort of in the dog-house - and a week later would put on Mesut's shirt. He also made the bench and wouldn't feature for this game.

These men don't hate each at all!

And they flirted and giggled and stuff while the camera panned over to the bench a few times.

I remember this game very clearly, and have watched it a couple of times because of the unbelievable ending to the match. But things didn't go too well at first. Madrid dominated completely (City couldn't string two passes together) but something was missing. A finishing touch, perhaps? Also, it was a conservative line-up, with Essien next to Sami and Xabi.

I remember vividly what the commentator said (in reference to the disciplinary problems Mourinho supposedly had) as Mesut got ready to come on. "I've made my point, now let's try to win this match."

It was an early example of Messien, incidentally - a bromance we have all come to love!

And he was joined by a couple of friends when things began to go badly...(note scoreline in minute 73)

In post-match reviews, Mesut was written up very nicely. The Guardian minute-by-minute was very complimentary and noted him "skipping near the City six-yard area....providing danger..."

Isn't Marcelo's goal a peach? And with his right foot too!

Mesut was to receive a very nice pass from Marcelo in the 80th minute - but Hart got to the ball before he could...

Cue bug-eyed despair!!

Mesut even tried to head the ball a couple of times - which was a strange sight, it has to be said!

Nice view!

Like a ballerina!

Then City scored off a free kick and it was pretty dire until friend Benzema decided he'd had enough...

A real striker's goal!

Everyone was so pleased with the draw after all that - except for the amazing Mr Slick, of course - and in the final minute...

Cast your minds back...and you'll remember that Crispy had said he was unhappy the week before. I quote the Sky Sports Commentators: "And he says he's unhappy. Listen to how much they love him!" as the stadium exploded!

Mesut put his arm around Modric and rested an exhausted head on Arbeloa's back while everyone cued up to give Crispy some love.

It's no secret, I think, how much I adore Crispy Ronaldo - so here are a few more gifs of his beautiful winning goal...

And that was Madrid's match from a Mesuty point of view!

He was all over the place!

Looking back, a vital three points!
