Interviewer: I've got Sami Khedira and Mesut Özil here. Help me, which of you should I praise first? (The boys shift on their feet and look embarrassed. Mesut gives a distinct sigh. The interviewer takes pity on the pair of them). All right then, Sami Khedira! I have to praise the team, they did wonderfully, earned their victory and you should be praised for your effort and the wonderfully played football. Are you satisfied?
Sami: I think we can be very pleased with the team's performance. Everyone did their best, did what the trainer wanted. AC Milan did very well, offensively especially, but we (the defence) hardly gave them space. We also have great offensive players, so it was a great evening for everyone.
Interviewer: The game was over in the first quarter hour (turns to Özil ) because of you. You made it 2-0 with your first Champions League goal. Are you pleased? Good performance? Scored a goal? Everything good?
Mesut: Certainly. My first Champions League goal, it's naturally a wonderful thing but the important thing is that we got the 3 points, that we played well as a team up front and let almost nothing through behind and we're naturally very happy about it and that we won the game.
Interviewer: You turned 22 this past week. What's it like to play in such a huge game, and then, when you are substituted, to see the crowd stand and applaud you as you come off?
Mesut: It's naturally a very nice feeling. You could see this evening how the fans supported us. They're just the best fans ever - they supported us for a full 90 minutes and it makes us happy.
Interviewer: You were both deeply involved in the play. AC Milan got a shock, being 2-0 behind but is there any disappointment at all that in the last 60 minutes there were many opportunities to do more?
Sami: Well perhaps, but AC Milan played well. You could see that they couldn't get possession, that we controlled the game and if a team gives up playing against such a team, especially the offensive players, after taking a lead it becomes very dangerous. And one could see, in one or two of their plays, that they have good offensive players - we've seen that in other games. But we played the full 90 minutes. I wouldn't say that AC Milan played badly I just think we played better.
Interviewer: The language difficulties still exist of course, but you are starting players now - are getting on with your Spanish abilities?
Sami: In the meantime yes. Mesut and I are learning Spanish every day, learning it intensively. I find personally that I understand a lot. I can understand the instructions from the trainer, and the other players. I still hold back a little when speaking, because an uncertainty (lack of confidence) exists, but the important thing is that I can understand the other players. And in the meantime if I want to say something, or need to say something, I can in the meantime - particularly on the field.
Interviewer: A strong performance from you. (Turns to Mesut) And you've been using sign-language - after you scored your goal (Mesut had kissed his fingers and formed a backwards C after scoring). Would you tell us what this signal means?
Mesut (smiles and laughs): That's my secret. (Sami also laughs).
Interviewer: That’s just like Miroslav Klose! (Miroslav Klose, Germany’s striker, celebrates goals by holding up three fingers. He has since confessed that they represent his wife and twins.) Well then, what can we expect from you? Do you think you are through to the group of sixteen or is it too early to say that? What more can Real Madrid achieve? You are undefeated this season.
Mesut: We want to win all the other games too. Every game is important to us and we want to push forward, and that’s what we’ll do.
Interviewer: Good performances...good night from Madrid - back to Munich.
